Christopher Nolan the master story teller, visionary and arguably the most influential face in Hollywood comes with his first historical period drama Dunkirk.

He has never stuck to one genre, his range has varied from thrillers to superhero blockbusters to science-based epics.

Nolan re-imaged Batman to The Dark Knight,I have the utmost respect for Christopher Nolan for one he believes in traditional film making and deep storytelling and packs a punch with his non-linear screenplay.

But can Nolan do it again with Dunkirk ?

For those who are familiar with the Dunkirk evacuation know very well that this Saga is an unlikely candidate for a major Hollywood production, especially one from Christopher Nolan.

As soon as the movie starts, onscreen appear these phrases “1. The Mole, 2. The Sea, 3.The Air” and you right away you know that the narrative is woven between these three threads and Nolan has enough space to make the narrative intense and thrilling.

Nolan as always does things differently, this is no straightforward war movie where the director takes the liberty of brutally depicting the gory, instead Nolan goes for a nonlinear storytelling and simple, authentic visuals, the movie is visceral without having to rely on gory.

Dunkrik doesn’t skim on the reality of war. Nolan keeps the tension, intensity of the battle for most part of the run time, Hans Zimmer’s score adds to the intensity.

As an audience you feel the helplessness of the characters, you feel the tension the characters feel and you feel like you lived through a war throughout the movie and that is where this movie works.

Time and again, the action swells and dips, like a wave, then suddenly delivers a slap in the face.

we don’t actually witness the explosion, any more than the characters do. We need to feel their fear.
By constantly cutting between the three stories, Nolan, the master of nonlinear screenplay, allows us no chance to relax before the next onslaught begins.

With land, sea, air, and, finally, fire: the basic elements are covered.

At last Honor is salvaged, Hope is restored, Humanity wins and the men who were lost and clueless scrape the finish line and reach home to a warm reception.

I would highly recommend watching this movie, its worth the money.
